We’re so glad you’re joining us at Journalism That Matters-Denver: “Journalism is Dead; Long Live Journalism.”
With the amazing help and hosting of the Estlow Center at the University of Denver, we have a chance over two days to gain new insight into what’s working, and what could more effectively foster community in the Front Range news ecosystem and beyond. And challenged by the speaking and work of Bill McKibben, we’ll share stories and techniques for some of the topical challenges in the new journalism environment.
So welcome! This note is about the “logistics.” As you read through it, feel free to hit the “reply” button at anytime and fire off a note with questions or concerns. We’ll help! Help us make this the best possible experience by letting us know if you need anything.

WEATHER AND DRESS

Please feel free to dress casually. We will walk a couple of blocks to a dining hall for lunch on Wednesday. As of Friday evening, March 29, the forecast for April 3-4 in Denver is cloudy with temperatures ranging from 29 degrees to 65 degrees between day and night. For those of you arriving in the Mile High city from lower altitudes, remember that Denver’s climate is dry and you should consider drinking plenty of water while visiting.
FOOD AND LOGISTICS

We meet both days in Ruffato Hall, Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver, 1999 East Evans Ave., Denver, CO 80208-1700 Here’s a map:

We’ll provide a light continental breakfast to all our registrants on both Wednesday and Thursday morning beginning at 9 a.m. in Ruffato Hall. If you can arrive at 9 a.m. it will be an excellent time to informally network before we gather in the round. There will also be AM and PM break refreshments (including fruit and cookies) on both days.
We have arranged for us to eat lunch on Wednesday in a campus dining hall.
A heavy hors d’oeuvres reception (sufficient for dinner) will be provided for all JTM registrants on Wednesday prior to Bill McKibben’s talk and discussion.
On Thursday, we’ll provide a choice of box lunches for all registered participants.

We”re preparing this weekend a “bio book” for all of us to refer to before and during our gathering. We’ll be assembling it from the links, profiles, interests expressed and questions you answered when you registered. HAVE YOU POSTED YOUR ‘CATALYTIC CONVERSATION?’

At JTM, we’ve discovered over more than a dozen events in the last decade a unique way to start the conversation before we gather. We call this process “Catalytic Conversations.”
Last weekend, each of us received an email inviting us into a conversation with another conference participant. The idea is to be in touch with one other person, learn about their expertise, mission and intentions, and then write about it. This gives us all a head start on the idea-generating process — and a reason to meet someone new.
By now, you should have connected by phone with your “partner” and one of you (or both) has written a quick synopsis of your phone chat. If you haven’t yet done so, email your notes to jtm@journalismthatmatters.org or post them directly to the website using the instructions provided.
OK, so you may be feeling a time crunch. If you’re worried about typing something up, then at least connect by phone and forego the write-up. We try to match folks who will learn something new from an outside-their-silo conversation. It’s an excuse to make a new professional connection. So go for it!
PARKING PERMIT

About 30 of us will be “driving in” on Wednesday, Thursday or both days. DU has arranged for permit parking in “Lot L”, a few blocks’ walk from our meeting in Ruffato Hall, Morgridge College of Education, 1999 East Evans Ave., Denver CO 80208. Before you arrive at the parking lot, you need to print and be ready to display or show this permit:

TRANSIT DIRECTIONS

Many of us are staying at the Sheraton Downtown hotel. Ruffato Hall is a three-block walk from the Denver metropolitan light rail stop (red, purple or blue lines), which runs directly downtown to the convention center, three blocks from the Sheraton Hotel. It takes about 17 minutes; cash fare is $2.25 and trains run approximately every half hour until at least midnight (every 15 minutes during the day).

DU Professor Andrew Matranga’s class will create and build a social-media aggregation page for JTM-Denver using the “Storify” platform. His students will be watching and participating in our gathering, and will be blogging, photographing and “tweeting.”

INTERNET ACCESS ON SITE

The University of Denver has graciously agreed to extend complimentary Internet access to JTM-Denver participants. The wireless service is password protected and you will need a user name and password to log in. Ask for a user name and password when you register and receive your name badge and information packet. Retain that temporary user name for both Wednesday and Thursday.
