At the end of Friday, participants in Journalism That Matters reassembled to learn what “headlines” had emerged from their discussions, to be focal points for possible actions on Saturday.[edit]

New News Ecology

  • Free mid-level editors from constraints of traditional media structure
  • Happy journalists are thinkers, outside the box
  • Don’t be overwhelmed by production, financial demands

Purpose, Place

  • Healthy communities are the purpose of journalism
  • Purpose is a conversation about democracy to make sure it lives, thrives
  • Conversation about democracy turned into protection racket
  • Importance of deciding your personal and institutional purpose
  • If it bleeds it leads vs. journalist as healer
  • My life not into bubble of negativity
  • Think of journalist as surgeon, or cancer treatment (preventive)?

Nonprofit model

  • Multiple models – BBC, PBS, donations
  • Public broadcast model transferred to print, online, ethnic—would it work?
  • Still a role for print: It’s the ark that gets us through the flood
  • Gates Foundation, sugar daddies, public foundations?

Youth Voices

  • Youth want context
  • Use myspace, etc., to mine ideas for youth content in MSM
  • Use roundtable discussions facilitated by kids
  • Build audience around online global contacts among kids
