{"id":625,"date":"2012-01-15T13:20:56","date_gmt":"2012-01-15T20:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/?p=625"},"modified":"2012-01-15T13:20:56","modified_gmt":"2012-01-15T20:20:56","slug":"engaging-journalists-and-the-public-in-hungernouishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/2012\/01\/15\/engaging-journalists-and-the-public-in-hungernouishment\/","title":{"rendered":"Engaging Journalists and the Public in Hunger\/Nouishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Notes from Parker Lindner<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From<a href=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/news-oasis-to-end-hunger-in-puget-sound\/\"> January 9 News Oasis\/Nourishing Networks meeting<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our discussion covered various ways to engage people with the issue.. \u00a0We talked about how to encourage participation \u00a0from journalists and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Some ideas included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Locate journalism teachers and proposing this as a writing focus.<\/li>\n<li>Establish \u00a0points of access, collect data.<\/li>\n<li>Share information on the hunger\/nourishment issues and challenges in our community. What are the facts about hunger and nourishment or the lack of it?\u00a0 Where is it? What are the causes?<\/li>\n<li>Read \u2018between the lines\u2019 in interpreting data for example from use of \u00a0free and reduced lunch programs.<\/li>\n<li>Ferret out underserved groups such as students, families and senior citizens.<\/li>\n<li>Expose the network of service organizations working on the issue.<\/li>\n<li>Use community technology centers as touch points.\u00a0 This is where underserved populations come to get connected.<\/li>\n<li>Look for existing blogs and web sites. In social networks, cross posting, commenting, sharing and search engine optimization are the way ideas are amplified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also discussed the notion that the stories must be able to grab attention.\u00a0 They must be brief. We don\u2019t think people will read long tomes.\u00a0 Instead we could build a simple structure for exposing personal stories \u2013 both of people with needs and of people\/groups who are inventing (taking responsibility for) \u00a0providing \u00a0solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Also, consider the \u2018master birder\u2019 model.
