{"id":541,"date":"2011-11-11T13:53:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-11T20:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/?p=541"},"modified":"2011-11-11T13:53:02","modified_gmt":"2011-11-11T20:53:02","slug":"report-back-from-the-sic2011-the-seattle-interactive-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/2011\/11\/11\/report-back-from-the-sic2011-the-seattle-interactive-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Report back from the #SIC2011 &#8211; The Seattle Interactive Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Seattle Interactive Conference logo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.journalismaccelerator.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sic-sq.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"267\" \/>Journalists have always covered the tech industry as a section of the newspaper, but now, due to the personal media explosion,<strong> the very existence of the trade is dependent on conversations and  decisions that happen at events like this year\u2019s Seattle Interactive  Conference<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/%23SIC2011\" target=\"_blank\">#SIC2011<\/a> had many of the same trimmings as the now messianic #SXSWi (South By  Southwest Interactive). The obligatory cute cartoon logos, fancy  afterparties, overt corporate sponsorship, installation exhibits, free  marketing schwag, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleinteractive.com\/\/index.php\/entry\/seattle-interactive-selects-unsocial-as-official-mobile-app?\/news\/entry\/seattle-interactive-selects-unsocial-as-official-mobile-app\" target=\"_blank\">custom smartphone app<\/a> were all part of the $300+ ticket, a tad steep for your average journalist trying to get a bite on how to stay alive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how does this deliver in terms of fulfilling the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/funding-initiatives\/knight-community-information-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">information needs of a community<\/a>?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First let\u2019s talk mobile<\/strong>. \u201cSocial\/Local\/Mobile\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/%23solomo\" target=\"_blank\">#SoLoMo<\/a> was the expression I picked up from Jason Karas of Seattle startup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trover.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trover<\/a>, who put up some interesting stats on rapid mobile adoption:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>350 million people are using Facebook through their phones<\/li>\n<li>4 billionTwitter posts come from phones each month (maybe not all through smartphones)<\/li>\n<li>1 billion photos are shared through phones each month (not clear if this is the entire web, or just social media)<\/li>\n<li>1 billion Foursquare checkins have been logged to date<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s more interesting is the motivation behind the SoLoMo phenomenon<\/strong>.
