{"id":508,"date":"2011-10-20T13:30:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T20:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/?p=508"},"modified":"2011-10-20T13:30:47","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T20:30:47","slug":"seattle-journalism-commons-project-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/2011\/10\/20\/seattle-journalism-commons-project-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Seattle Journalism Commons Project Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to support from <a title=\"TPF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thepattersonfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Patterson Foundation<\/a>, the Seattle Journalism Commons, in partnership with <a title=\"Lisa Skube\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rjionline.org\/people\/lisa-skube\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Skube<\/a> &#8212; creator of\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalismaccelerator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Journalism Accelerator<\/a>, ran a 6-month experiment in supporting the people in the Puget Sound region&#8217;s emergning news and information network. \u00a0The executive overview is below. \u00a0The full report is attached: <a href=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/492\/2011\/10\/SJC-Final-Project-Report.pdf\">SJC Final Project Report<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/492\/2011\/10\/SJC.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-509 alignright\" title=\"SJC\" src=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/492\/2011\/10\/SJC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/492\/2011\/10\/SJC.png 242w, https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/492\/2011\/10\/SJC-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">***********<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2>EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW<\/h2>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The intent of the project was to cultivate a robust, collaborative regional network of people in the news and information community by sharing resources, learning from one another, and documenting area activities \u2013 doing journalism on journalism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did we do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We reached out to understand what the local journalism community wanted.\u00a0\u00a0 They told us that they would like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The means to connect in person and online<\/li>\n<li>An online space to share resources and learn from each other<\/li>\n<li>A simple means to know what\u2019s happening in the area \u2013 a shared calendar and reporting on activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We organized to meet these needs and took action.\u00a0 We brought people together face-to-face and online, curated a calendar, and did \u201cjournalism on journalism\u201d.\u00a0 For example, we have original coverage of local journalism activities not found elsewhere: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/seattlejournalismcommons\/category\/events-2\/.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We reflected on the experience and made plans for our next steps (see \u201cWhat\u2019s next\u201d below).<\/p>\n<p>One team member analyzed the online information flow among food organizations in the Puget Sound region.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did it go?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We took a nebulous concept \u2013 a \u201cjournalism commons\u201d and gave it form.\u00a0 We drew people in, formed a great working team, and found wonderful partners \u2013 notably Lisa Skube and the <em>Journalism Accelerator<\/em>.\u00a0 Our biggest obstacle was technology.
