He explained the WNC\u2019s complaint process, and described the latest case \u2013 a complaint by Washington\u2019s Secretary of State, Sam Reed, against KIRO7 TV, the CBS affiliate in Seattle. He noted that all of the documents on the complaint, plus the KIRO stories, were just\u00a0\u00a0posted on the WNC\u2019s website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wanewscouncil.org\/\">www.wanewscouncil.org<\/a>). He said we have invited the public to weigh in as a kind of \u201cCitizens Online News Council,\u201d but it was just posted last Friday and we don\u2019t have much reaction yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TOM STITES \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your health is under threat, with the financial problems in the media.<br \/>\n<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How does journalism achieve trust of the reader\/viewer\/user\/participants? We live in this culture of comprehensive distrust of institution, with the media taking up the rear.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PETER BLOCK \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the truth of this (i.e., mistrust)? Why aren\u2019t we trusted? What do we do to earn this trust?<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TOM \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you actually had TAO in the media, you might start to earn it.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PETER \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who could you find that would be committed to restoring and rebuilding trust in the media?<\/p>\n<p>Crank up the retribution on those who have sinned. Do public declarations.<\/p>\n<p>Who is your constituency? Who cares about whether you exist or not?<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure, let it go.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>TOM \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can you put your energy and that of your backers, to pursue your goals?<\/p>\n<p>If the tool you have is no longer sharp enough, you need new tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PETER \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Change your tagline to: An Independent Forum for Rebuilding Trust in the Media.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s interesting, because the issue of trust is a huge issue in the media.
