The program is for an “unconference”. What looks like a schedule shell, will actually be packed with specific ideas and proposals as we begin to work together. Even before you arrive, you’ll learn about the professional passions and projects of fellow participants through pre-conference interviews and people’s bios. Think of this process as creating the panels and discussion based upon our collective knowledge and purpose. It requires a leap of faith. Neither a show, nor a performance, which implies actors and audience, NewsEcology.org is a collaboration in which all act and all listen actively.<\/em>

Sunday, March 1 — 3 p.m.-9:30 p.m. — “Setting the Context”<\/span><\/p>\n

(all activities, at Poynter Institute, 801 3rd Street South)<\/p>\n

Purpose<\/h3>\n

To create a shared framework for talking about the new news ecology that seeds thinking about new roles, new tools and new relationships\/business models.<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span>3:00 p.m. — Registration opens<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span>4:00 p.m. — Introductions – to each other and to a preliminary map of the emerging news ecology<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span>We\u2019ll open with conversations among participants that introduce them to each other and to an emerging map of the new news ecology (as well as a map of the traditional newsroom)<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/em><\/span>6:00 p.m. — Dinner at Poynter<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span>7:30 p.m. — Exploring the “Value Network of Journalism”<\/span><\/h3>\n

Possibilities Day: Exploring ideas\/designing initiatives<\/strong><\/h3>\n

<\/strong>The first full day is a chance to broadly explore questions of interest. We\u2019ll offer a focusing question along the lines of: \u201cWhat journalism practices \u2013 jobs, skills, relationships, business models – can provide society the value journalism has to offer?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/em><\/span>Each of us has a picture of what journalism – at its best – might become. Using\u00a0Open Space Technology<\/a>, we will explore those images and begin to converge on a collective understanding of what can be accomplished individually and where common interests arise. Come prepared to discuss what most interests you.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n

With an action-oriented organizing question, you will be invited to take your work to the next level: taking ideas deeper; getting more specific about moving initiatives forward, whether something that you are already pursuing or something born at the conference.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n
