Esther Thorson is acting dean of the Missouri School of Journalism (June 2007). She has served as associate dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and director of Research for the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Thorson has published more than 100 scholarly pieces on the news effects, advertising, media economics, and health communication, and has edited six books. She applies research, both hers and that of her colleagues, in newsrooms and advertising agencies across the U.S. and abroad. Thorson has two central management goals, first to integrate theory and practice in graduate journalism and persuasion education, and second to bring scholarly research to bear on the news and advertising industries. Her research (with Professor Duffy) for the Newspaper Association of America has been presented in national forums throughout the U.S. during this past school year.
