David A. Zeeck is executive editor and senior vp for news of McClatchy’s [Tacoma, Wash.] News Tribune, and current president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. A native of Plainview, Texas, he worked 20 years at The Kansas City Star as a reporter, city editor, managing editor and executive editor. While at the Star, the paper won two Pulitzer Prizes, one during his tenure as executive editor. He has served on the boards of New Directions for News (an industry think tank), the Associated Press Managing Editors, the Missourian Publishing Association, and the Kansas City Urban League. He also has served on advisory committees in mass communications and journalism at Texas Tech and the University of Missouri. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and earned his MBA from Rockhurst University, a Jesuit university in Kansas City, Mo., before joining The Star.
