What does it do?<\/p>\n<p>Host: Nate Stevens<\/p>\n<p>As practiced:<br \/>\n\u2014Gives credence to people who deny facts or assert factual inaccuracies<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Generates distrust in media<\/p>\n<p>What should it be?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u201cI want to change the world&#8221; is not objective<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Does wanting to have impact make you not objective?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fairness and accuracy are the standards<\/p>\n<p>\u2014Objectivity is a product of historical market forces<\/p>\n<p>Who&#8217;s in the newsroom affects what is considered objective<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u201cObjectivity&#8221; as concept that reinforces white supremacy-African American journalists have challenged that<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Selections of the facts \u2013 framing\u2013 context are subjective choices that have major impact<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u201c\u201dBlack reporters cannot be objective about black lives matter&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Straight CIS white dudes have not lived lives of others\u2013 Are not neutral<\/p>\n<p>What can objectivity mean? What should it mean?<\/p>\n<p>Not<\/p>\n<p>Stenography of bullshit<\/p>\n<p>Middle of the road<\/p>\n<p>Two sides to the issue<\/p>\n<p>In reality clouded by subjectivity<\/p>\n<p>A baseball bat for control especially among political partisans<\/p>\n<p>Should<\/p>\n<p>Fact checking<\/p>\n<p>Accuracy<\/p>\n<p>The Universal process to vet stories<\/p>\n<p>Find out the facts of what happened to inform community response<\/p>\n<p>Multiple sources<\/p>\n<p>Pay attention to words and their meaning to other people<\/p>\n<p>Example issue: undocumented immigration<\/p>\n<p>Fact: undocumented immigration generates a net economic benefit<\/p>\n<p>Part of the story is the \u201dbuild a wall people\u201d\u2013 but giving them equal coverage creates false equivalency &gt;&gt; Proportionality<\/p>\n<p>Representation of community<\/p>\n<p>Representation of people by issue<\/p>\n<p>Diversity of perspectives\u2013 opinions\u2013 the experiences<\/p>\n<p>Editor as well as reporters<\/p>\n<p>Spanish language programming\u2013 Spanish-speaking reporters\u2014\u201cComplicate the issue\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participatory media project requires safety, time but who is the audience?<\/p>\n<p>System at hand: the newsroom &gt;&gt; goals and strategies<\/p>\n<p>Who is our audience now?<\/p>\n<p>Who do we speak to?<\/p>\n<p>What do we want to present to them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMission to enlighten an advanced conversation\u201d\u2013 huh?<\/p>\n<p>Impact is not objectivity<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is objectivity in journalism?
