The way it worked:  People wrote a word or phrase on a card. Then we circulated and passed cards. Each pair of people discussed the two cards they held, and wrote on the back two nmbers &#8212; one on each card &#8212; which together numerically totaled seven.  Then we circulated and did this again &#8212; five times. Eventually each card had a set of numbers on the back, ranging from 0 to 7.  Summing the numbers &#8220;ranked&#8221; each card &#8212; and the phrase on it.  Here&#8217;s background on this debriefing &#8220;game&#8221;:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.thiagi.com\/archived-games\/2015\/2\/22\/thirty-five-for-debriefing<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what we came up with: <\/p>\n<p>25\tReciprocity<br \/>\n25\tElevate authentic voices<br \/>\n24\tIt&#8217;s to be honest, authentic and true with those I&#8217;m working with, to follow through on promises so trust can be built because without that quality everything falls apart<br \/>\n24\tDesire to go beyond &#8220;two sides&#8221; of the issue<br \/>\n23\tBuild bridges between empathy (personal interest stories, arts expression, local connections) and data (context, backstory, facts, charts) as well as &#8220;action&#8221; (more from consumer to doer)<br \/>\n23\tEmpathy, building to create connection to create a more compassoinate world<br \/>\n22\tWork with those most affect, not those who claim to represent them<br \/>\n22\tDon&#8217;t work alone; invest in relationships as much mor more than products<br \/>\n22\tEngagement is partly about sharing control and ownership<br \/>\n21\tis the person in front of me (or on the line) feeling like he\/she\/they have been listened to?<br \/>\n21\tWe need our engagement work to be more intentional &#8212; with planning, someone to shepard it, and ways to evaluate the success of the effort<br \/>\n21\tHonesty about where we are and where we want to go<br \/>\n21\tEmpowerment<br \/>\n21\tOpenness (to new perspectives, ideas, partnerships, etc. etc.)<br \/>\n20\tInclusion &#8212; finding unpopular and unheard voices<br \/>\n20\tListen from the ground up<br \/>\n20\tTrust built over time<br \/>\n20\tContext<br \/>\n20\tMeet people where they area, not where I want them to be<br \/>\n20\tAccountability<br \/>\n19.5\tCuriousity<br \/>\n19\tCaring<br \/>\n19\tAuthenticity, going deep<br \/>\n19\tMutual respect<br \/>\n19\tMeaning \/ trust \/ dialogue<br \/>\n19\tHumility<br \/>\n19\tTrust: Without trust, engagement is at best incomplete and at worst non-existent or even toxic. We live in untrustworthy times, so we need better models.<br \/>\n19\tUnderstanding<br \/>\n19\tExposure to and appreciation of diverse political views<br \/>\n18.5\tCommunity of subscribers and loyal supporters speak to us all the time \/ inclusion<br \/>\n18\tWho benefits<br \/>\n18\tConnecting<br \/>\n18\tInclusiveness<br \/>\n18\tListening to understand, not explain<br \/>\n18\tTransparency equals (?) honesty<br \/>\n18\tConnectivity<br \/>\n18\tWork with, not for, people<br \/>\n18\tAuthentic<br \/>\n17.5\tListening  \/ empathy<br \/>\n17\tIntegrity<br \/>\n17\tAuthentic collaboration<br \/>\n17\tPeople need to feel hurt<br \/>\n17\tStorytelling<br \/>\n17\tSolution based<br \/>\n17\tKnow thyself beyond all things in order to be fully available for others. Practice seeing every person in their full dignity, without labels, without diminishing thjem.<br \/>\n17\tEngagement is worthwhile for everyone involved &#8212; everyone gets something from it<br \/>\n17\tHolding the space for engagement<br \/>\n17\tInclusion<br \/>\n17\tOpen heart and mind<br \/>\n16\tDo what you can to allow stories to flow between people &#8212; the shortest distance between two people is a story<br \/>\n16\tSomeone in the &#8220;audience&#8221; knows much more about any subject than we as journalists<br \/>\n16\tSupporting self determination<br \/>\n16\tCompassion<br \/>\n15\tCarve out time to collaborate without distractions<br \/>\n14\tBuy in from the newsroom<br \/>\n14\tResidents: Connecting I to us.<br \/>\n14\tDemocracy<br \/>\n14\tAll opinions matter<br \/>\n13.5\tSynthesis<br \/>\n13\tTrustworthy engagement<br \/>\n13\tJustice: Bedrock value that informs my engagement.<br \/>\n13\tThat I am not doing enough of the right type of engagement<br \/>\n12.5\tEngagement is about redefining the role of media so that our resources and expertise continue to have value for readers<br \/>\n12\tRemember the people<br \/>\n12\tTo be useful<br \/>\n11\tAuthenticity<br \/>\n10\tPeople already know what needs to be done; I&#8217;d like to give people a tool to do that<br \/>\n10\tNot being contained by speed but pay attention to practicality<br \/>\n9\tRawness<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A PHOTO OF HOW IT WORKS: https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/10407505@N03\/21903291885\/ At Experiencing Engagement on Friday afternoon, we used an exercise called &#8220;Thirty Five&#8221; &#8212; involving 3&#215;5 index cards &#8212; to bubble up key words and phrases most important to participants.
