You are valuing people and having a two-way conversation. It\u2019s authentic. <\/p>\n<p>What do you have to give up as a journalist up in order to have a true authentic engagement. <\/p>\n<p>Letting people know we know who they are. Giving them tickets to something that we know they would enjoy. <\/p>\n<p>ENGAGEMENT IS . . <\/p>\n<p>Breaking up who we\u2019re actually trying to engage &#8212; &#8211; donors versus newsroom versus particular sections of the newsroom . <\/p>\n<p>WHO:<br \/>\nDonors<br \/>\nWorks<br \/>\nFunders<br \/>\nCommunity: Existing and potential<br \/>\nSocial change movements<br \/>\nNGOs<br \/>\nCommunity of interest<br \/>\nVoters<br \/>\nPolicy makers<br \/>\nMillientials\/ Different Generations<br \/>\nMembers<br \/>\nBlind Spot audience<br \/>\nNational<br \/>\nNewsroom\/Organization<\/p>\n<p>WHAT:<br \/>\nContent creation<br \/>\nQuality of dialogue<br \/>\nBehavior of change &#8211; attitude\/action<br \/>\nIn person . .. events, conversation<br \/>\nSocial media\/digital\/on-air<br \/>\nOn-air\/broadcast<\/p>\n<p>WHY:<br \/>\nSocial capital<br \/>\nContent generation<br \/>\nTo create dialogue<br \/>\nFunders want to know<br \/>\nMobilize action &#8211; model for other communities<br \/>\nCreate new members<br \/>\nSocial change goals<br \/>\nBe a centering institution, public space<br \/>\nImproving our journalism<br \/>\nHuman connection<br \/>\n*Illustrating our value<\/p>\n<p>DEFINITIONS:<\/p>\n<p>As for someone who researches engagement:<br \/>\nThose aspects of audience interaction with media that go beyond exposure in ways that represent meaningful social outcomes. <\/p>\n<p>From the a young person (Millennial):<br \/>\nAbout a mutual kind of exchange of value. News is valuing what I have to say and they care about what I am saying. And it\u2019s something that you\u2019re actually interested in. <\/p>\n<p>To the newsroom:<br \/>\nI take our reporting into the community to make it more meaningful. <\/p>\n<p>Finding the story that a community needs and giving it to them in the space that they already at. The right story at the right time at the right place for the right people.<\/p>\n<p>To a journalist:<br \/>\nHow to be more relevant, how to keep revenue up, get people to care more about your reporting. <\/p>\n<p>More explanatory journalism. How we got there versus making it more source based and easier to digest. Making it more accessible in how the story is even produced without being condescending. <\/p>\n<p>Education lab:<br \/>\nThe story was the starting point. Engagement is keeping the story going, the tail going. <\/p>\n<p>Magazine &#8211; Internally to the newsroom:<br \/>\nEngagement is recognizing and inviting the collective smarts and wisdom of our readership\/audience. And realizing that we are not the holders of the solutions but that they are coming from the communities. <\/p>\n<p>I am helping my client find and be able to speak to its audience. <\/p>\n<p>Engagement is a way to infuse journalism with community conversation at the start and ensure that there is an audience for your work before it actually comes out. <\/p>\n<p>Engagement involves going to the preferred physical space or platform and language of the community who is most affected by the issue that you cover. It allows for a more meaningful relationships so that you are creating that between the community and the newsroom. I am not a fan of the voice to the voiceless, giving a platform to the voices that are not heard. So that your authentically responsibility and respectfully sharing their stories and their needs. It is not poverty porn. Not swooping in and out. <\/p>\n<p>How do you fact check communities about what is going on?
