How can we move into a position of lasting change? We delved into this question with a prompt from solutions journalism: What\u2019s working? Initiatives from North Carolina to New Mexico were discussed. The group grounded most of its discussion in examples from WHYY\/NICE (<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/nice\/\">News &amp; Information Community Exchange<\/a>). Eric Marsh of WHYY\/NICE used the example of his mutual aid information network, NICE, to illustrate how to cultivate relationships between media organizations of differing sizes and targets. WHYY serves as a backbone org to support smaller outlets in the Philadelphia area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eric\u2019s initiative description:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NICE funded by Knight\/Lenfest (hyperlocal)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan to exist 5 years&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future of journalism is hyperlocal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empathy interviews\/listening&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are they from or in the community&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mutual aid collaborative, not a top-down org WHYY serves as backbone org&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Several orgs working collaboratively, sharing content across platforms, taking social and printing it&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WHYY does not own or control content from collaborators&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WHYY provides monthly stipends and community sources&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NICE partners serve as community ambassadors&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges + solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Getting buy-in from the newsroom and community&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is slow work&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The group agreed that funders can help create structures to help build strong programs: \u201cMoney can incentivize good behavior.\u201c<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A trend in philanthropy is funding collaborative efforts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funders want to be at the table<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They want to talk about the mission before they fund; bring them along with the discussion, if they are a part of it, they are more likely to come to the table&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funders can help create the structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Money can incentivize good behavior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A downside is its hard to get funders\u2019 attention if you\u2019re not already in the map<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The group agreed on five ingredients for creating lasting change:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working in network hubs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing from a news ecosystem to an information ecosystem&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leveraging storytelling networks to amplify content and support outlets of varying sizes\/reach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help partners reach their goals in the context of collaboration outcomes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create an exit strategy instead of focusing on the exit date&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attendees discussed how to build for sustainability beyond singular projects in journalism.
