Must attend to cultural narratives of dominant and marginalized groups. What are the stories you are walking on\/into?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TIME: Slow movement through layers of \u201csoil\u201d, rich stories of communities must be infused with the layers of the history of the geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IDENTITY: In and of the world. Duality of identity. Personal\/professional\/ethnicity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOT economic\/profit motive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PROFESSIONAL CULTURE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Toxic Organizations\/Newsrooms CANNOT generate joy. Suppression of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalists are MEAN. Heightened emotions when journalists are extracting information and \u201cfixing\u201d communities. Journalists treat each other badly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I was treated like shit \u2192 so I passed it on.<\/strong><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/Y0F2vVG5Gfpj9oR2rV76B4FjhUOZg84xXDtxdREq_QX2IvTcYX3nd8d-qiEpom9szIovoTUEDNTkLPU6KfMFkkfj63aLAXhQC-KWf7pzbMAhpmjqyRrbAlP_4nnYKlERKB_JtLlSH6HOxPbXLPAl74A\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silencing \u2192 Professional culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Need Journalists Anonymous for personal sharing of trauma FROM newsrooms toward their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newsrooms embodying POWER\u2192 \u201cPlantation Culture\u201d. Being treated as journalists as indentured servants. Commercial\/profit motives drives POWER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But SERVICE with kindness can help generate joy from work and in the communities we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>REFLECTION: Need time to reflect on MOTIVATIONS\/Intentions. Examine, reflect. Are we seeking \u201cvalidation\u201d? Chasing reward\/incentive structures\/awards. Savior complex and ego \u2192 When reflecting on the overwhelmingness of engaging in and with communities. Capacity to respond. Feelings that we as journalists have to SOLVE the community issues. When our job is to make visible the systems and issues so communities can work to solve it for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Competition\/Individualism<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re a \u201cfunctioning cog\u201d in the machinery of journalism. Different kind of incentive structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>$$$&#8211;&gt; Figure out what works for your context. Experimentation AND changing from within.
