Who is we? Journalists, artists, librarians, activists, citizens, residents, those who care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the quest behind the question? How can journalism and engagement help communities to heal and create space for belonging?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

TRUST & LOVE; CARE = POWER<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heard Seen Loved translates to Belonging \u2192 JOY \u2192 Commitment and Action<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requires journalists to come from a different intention\u2192<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONNECTING \u2192 Brokering relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMMONALITIES FIRST, not differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RELEVANCE to community and decision making; love in action, news you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTHE SYSTEM\u201d makes visible the levers of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LANGUAGE, watchwords that diminish or erase points of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ATTEND ON MULTIPLE LEVELS\u2192 Historical narratives of a geography, slavery and oppression. Must attend to cultural narratives of dominant and marginalized groups. What are the stories you are walking on\/into?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TIME: Slow movement through layers of \u201csoil\u201d, rich stories of communities must be infused with the layers of the history of the geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IDENTITY: In and of the world. Duality of identity. Personal\/professional\/ethnicity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOT economic\/profit motive<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PROFESSIONAL CULTURE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Toxic Organizations\/Newsrooms CANNOT generate joy. Suppression of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists are MEAN. Heightened emotions when journalists are extracting information and \u201cfixing\u201d communities. Journalists treat each other badly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was treated like shit \u2192 so I passed it on.<\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silencing \u2192 Professional culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need Journalists Anonymous for personal sharing of trauma FROM newsrooms toward their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newsrooms embodying POWER\u2192 \u201cPlantation Culture\u201d. Being treated as journalists as indentured servants. Commercial\/profit motives drives POWER.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But SERVICE with kindness can help generate joy from work and in the communities we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

REFLECTION: Need time to reflect on MOTIVATIONS\/Intentions. Examine, reflect. Are we seeking \u201cvalidation\u201d? Chasing reward\/incentive structures\/awards. Savior complex and ego \u2192 When reflecting on the overwhelmingness of engaging in and with communities. Capacity to respond. Feelings that we as journalists have to SOLVE the community issues. When our job is to make visible the systems and issues so communities can work to solve it for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competition\/Individualism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re a \u201cfunctioning cog\u201d in the machinery of journalism. Different kind of incentive structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

$$$–> Figure out what works for your context. Experimentation AND changing from within. Typically underresourced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently hierarchical versus horizontal (democratizing, sharing of power)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we \u2192 Build a community learning organization? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

News\u2192Commerce\u2192Business\u2192Economies\u2192Political\u2192Power. Currently news for the 10 percent, not the 90 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRepresentative\u201d vs. Peer-to-Peer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery voice is valid.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gilded cages, filter bubbles, Ivory Tower \u2192 Research, talk, listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEE ME<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community listening, dialogue and learning;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic\/news hybrids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CULTURAL NARRATIVES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Journalism is just one of the cultural producers creating community narratives (museums, city planners, civic infrastructure, artists)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalism is a platform for business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connect to assets and community resources<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situated knowledge<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VALUE rather than lack<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HONOR lived experience<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provide means to communicate, listen, learn, \u2192 THEN report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
