{"id":202,"date":"2010-05-28T14:17:35","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T22:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/detroit\/?p=202"},"modified":"2010-05-28T14:17:35","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T22:17:35","slug":"our-part-of-the-elephant-organizing-and-funding-media-reform-while-avoiding-old-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/detroit\/2010\/05\/28\/our-part-of-the-elephant-organizing-and-funding-media-reform-while-avoiding-old-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Part of the Elephant &#8211; Organizing and Funding Media Reform While Avoiding Old Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Submitted by Matt Renner on Fri, 05\/28\/2010 &#8211; 2:17pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Session Reporter: <\/strong>Matt Renner<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field-type-text field-field-participants\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item odd\">\n<p><strong>Conversationalist 1: <\/strong>Matt Renner<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-type-text field-field-sesion-host\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item odd\">\n<p><strong>Conversationalist 2: <\/strong>Linda Jue<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>&#8220;We&#8217;re all dealing with different parts of the elephant.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediagiraffe.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Jtm-dc-Linda_Jue\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Jue<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The conversation between Linda Jue and myself \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/matt-renner\/9\/a8\/119\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Renner<\/a>)\u00a0was extremely productive and helped me to prepare for the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/JTMDetroit\" target=\"_self\">conference in Detroit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We discussed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/ghettoization\" target=\"_blank\">ghettoization<\/a> of Independent Media as only something for liberals and elite\/majority liberals at that.<\/li>\n<li>The way this &#8220;liberal&#8221; stigma keeps powerful journalism from being taken seriously.<\/li>\n<li>The fear or heightened caution of institutional funders to be associated with Independent Media because of this association with liberalism and the implied political slant.<\/li>\n<li>A possible takeover of Independent\/New Media by traditional &#8220;old boys club&#8221; insiders who have been displaced as the traditional media crumbles.<\/li>\n<li>Past collaborations of Independent\/New Media organizations and how they could be more effective.<\/li>\n<li>The different focus elements of the upcoming conference and how to make sure we spur collaboration instead of waiting for direction.<\/li>\n<li>How to incorporate racial and class diversity into New Media models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthout.org\" target=\"_blank\">Truthout.org<\/a>, The Media Consortium, the Investigative News Network, ProPublica and other media organizations.<\/p>\n<p>I came away from the conversation feeling like I had made a real connection with someone with a deep background in Independent Media who I look forward to meeting in person. Hopefully Linda came away from our conversation feeling like she met someone with a real passion for Independent\/New Media and for figuring out how to make it work.
