Michael Stoll (michael – DOT – stoll – AT SYMBOL – sjsu – DOT – edu) is
\nspearheading the Public Press Initiative, a project to study
\nnoncommercial models for newspapers, in collaboration with Independent
\nArts & Media of San Francisco. Stoll teaches journalism at San Jose
\nState University, where he has also served as associate director of
\nGrade the News (http:\/\/www.gradethenews.org), a San Francisco Bay Area
\nmedia-watchdog project. <\/p>\n
With colleague John McManus he is the winner of
\ntwo recent journalism awards: the Professional Freedom and
\nResponsibility Award from the Association for Education in Journalism
\nand Mass Communication (2006) and a citation of excellence from the
\nMongerson Prize for Investigative Reporting on the Media from
\nNorthwestern University Journalism School (2006). <\/p>\n
Stoll is a regular
\ncontributor to SF Weekly on media issues. He previously worked as a
\nreporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Hartford Courant, and as
\ncity editor, investigative reporter and editorial-page editor at the San
\nFrancisco Examiner. Stoll is currently secretary of the board of the
\nNorthern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.<\/p>\n
