She is former editor of the &quot;Des Moines Register,&quot; which won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service under her direction. She previously wrote foreign-policy and national-security editorials for the &quot;New York Times&quot; and served as ombudsman for the &quot;Washington Post.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>She spent five years overseas, freelancing from Kinshasa and Paris.
