Manuel "Manny" Garcia has been assistant managing editor of The Miami Herald. Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, he came to The Herald in 1990 and has covered executions, courts, tainted elections and political corruption, sharing a Pulitzer Prize in 199 for stories on City of Miami vote fraud. He became the paper’s metro editor in 2003. He shared awards in 2005 from Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for the series, "Justice Withheld." Garcia, born on May 13, 1960, in Cuba, was raised in Miami’s Little Havana community. He graduated from Florida International University with a communications degree in print journalism and a minor in political science. He serves on the board of IRE.
Garcia came to The Herald in 1990 and has covered everything from an execution in Florida’s electric chair to the escape of five convicted killers from a high-security prison. He helped investigate the 1996 fraud-tainted Miami election, which led to the arrest of 36 people and the conviction of a Miami commissioner. Garcia was The Herald’s courts reporter and presently is a reporter on the paper’s investigative team.
In 1997, he shared several deadline reporting awards, including first and second place from Green Eyeshade. In 1999, Garcia shared in the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting for stories on the City of Miami vote fraud.
