Senior producer and analyst Andrew Haeg manages the day-to-day operations of Public Insight Journalism, a nearly five-year-old initiative at Minnesota Public Radio which aims to tap the knowledge of its audience to inform and shape news coverage at American Public Media.
Haeg has helped build a network of 30,000 public sources and the tools to draw insights from the Network, pass them onto to the newsroom and store them in a central database. He has worked with the newsroom to use the knowledge and insights gleaned from the audience to influence hundreds of stories and projects. He has also helped created numerous online interactive projects designed to educate and engage the audience in Public Insight Journalism. He is now working on spreading the tools and practices of Public Insight Journalism to other public radio newsrooms around the country.
Haeg helped start PIJ after a three -year stint as MPR’s business and economics reporter. He reported on local Fortune 500 companies and about trends and issues throughout the Minnesota economy. From 1999 to 2006, Andrew served as the Midwest stringer for The Economist magazine, writing articles on a wide range of topics.
Haeg received a degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a degree in English from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. He was co-winner of the 2000 Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business journalism and a key part of the team that won the 2003 and 2005 Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism and the 2007 Knight News Innovation EPpy Award.
