{"id":195,"date":"2011-03-30T15:41:46","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T23:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/createordie2\/?p=195"},"modified":"2011-03-30T15:41:46","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T23:41:46","slug":"nc-regional-business-incubators-offer-start-up-packages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/journalismthatmatters.org\/createordie2\/2011\/03\/30\/nc-regional-business-incubators-offer-start-up-packages\/","title":{"rendered":"NC Regional Business Incubators Offer Start-Up Packages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three North Carolina entrepreneurship incubators have pledged start-up packages to region-based companies that develop out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalismthatmatters.org\/createordie2\">Journalism That Matters &#8220;Create or Die 2&#8221;<\/a> to be held in Greensboro, NC from June 2-5, 2011.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nussbaumcfe.com\/\">The Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> based in Greensboro, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfubdi.org\/\">Wake Forest University Babcock-Demon Incubator<\/a> in Winston-Salem and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cednc.org\/\">Center for Entrepreneurial Development<\/a> in Durham have all pledged shared-office space, mentoring, networking and interns where possible to help launch the journalism start-ups from the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Create or Die 2&#8221; is a design|build|pitch event that brings together journalists, technologists, funders, educators and community activists interested in creating media entities for underserved or underrepresented communities.<\/p>\n<p>One goal of the gathering is to create several regional startups to address what Dr. Michelle Ferrier, associate professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elon.edu\">Elon University<\/a>, calls &#8220;media deserts&#8221; in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want the projects developed during Create or Die 2 to address the media deserts &#8212; where existing media lack the resources to address the community news and information needs or where communities are lacking in media options,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The start-up packages from the three regional incubators will give these projects a home and a life after the gathering ends. We want to plug the new teams into environments that can give them ongoing support as they develop their business plans,&#8221; said Ferrier.<\/p>\n<p>Registration is now open for individuals or existing teams with ideas or those interested in finding a team.
