MEETING SUMMARY

Present: Jonathan Lawson, Mike Fancher, Stephen Silha, Peggy Holman

Space and Date
The University of Washington is interested in partnering with us.  Following this meeting, Peggy and Stephen met with Roger Simpson, Mike met with David Domke.  The upshot is that they want to work with us.  We’re now looking for a date during fall quarter and hope to have one identified by the time we meet again.

Mike spoke to his contact at the University of Oregon about co-locating the conference.  There is apparently something similar already in the works.  He is investigating what this is to determine if there’s any synergy.  So far, he hasn’t uncovered anything; just interest in what we’re doing.

Our bias is to stay local, inviting people from Oregon and BC with the idea of doing something in those locations down the road.

Funding Update
Mike, Jonathan, and Stephen followed up on their leads from last week.  These conversations are in progress.  No funds are committed yet.

We discussed the need for a stripped down budget.  The attached revision reduces the registration fee, removes all food costs, and lowers payment to Stephen and Peggy.  It requires no outside funds to work.

Invitation
Jonathan drafted an invitation and revised it based on our feedback.  It is ready for comment/editing from any of you.  See

Jonathan presented a new draft:
Journalism That Matters:

Re-imagining a Regional Journalism Ecology
Seattle, [dates]

How can quality journalism support the civic and cultural health of a region?

What kind of news ecology do we need to cultivate to sustain the kind of journalism that best serves our community?

In traditional print and broadcast media, old economic models and distribution systems are seemingly on their way to extinction. Meanwhile, new media and communications platforms are proliferating like crazy.

As new technologies allow us to reinvent how we communicate with each other, economic, political and cultural shifts are changing how we all engage with journalism.
Beyond the noise of already-tired "old media vs. new media" arguments lurk serious questions about the future of journalism:
    * What aspects of traditional journalism are most vital to be protected?
    * To what extent are new media capable of replacing traditional media?
    * What can new media, or people using new communications tools, do better than traditional media?
    * How can the power of journalism and new communications tools be harnessed to allow all parts of a community to work together to address community needs?
    * How can journalism contribute to (and benefit from) efforts to expand civic engagement through access to social media and comunications tools?

You're invited to a three and a half-day conversation about the future of journalism in the Northwest and beyond with  journalists, bloggers, community media producers, editors, academics, media activists, digital entrepreneurs, citizen journalists, freelancers, and others who care about the future of healthy media and healthy communities.

Mike liked the invite, but cautioned about the “seemingly on their way to extinction” line… might threaten MSM folks.  We could just say “struggling.”

Peggy mentioned Jim Kennedy’s presentation at JTM-Poynter about AP research on under-30 readers. Showed an interest in context.

Mike will check Knight Commission language and see if anything might be used.

What about getting Seattle Channel ?  Stephen will contact Gary Gibson

What would PNW news ecology look like in 10 years if this conference is successful?
