Well, I've finally gotten my chance to write my thoughts on this at

Besides Ms Wojcicki's article, it also links to Paul Farhi's artice in AJR

This line blew me away this morning:
"Far too many of our future

administrators -- government officials -- should have the authority to
dictate what they read, write and talk about. "

RE: {JTM} Backlash to any government subsidies
The BBC is one model, and Ross' point about cultural and political differences is an important one. We are currently wrapping up an in-depth analysis of nearly 10 other international public media models - looking specifically at how they construct their firewalls between funding and content. We are exploring what is working and what's not and are complementing this with a content analysis that shows how different political and funding structures impact news output and coverage. We're also looking at how public media interacts with commercial media in productive and competitive ways.
Re: {JTM} Backlash to any government subsidies
Whether it is right-wing or left-wing, backlash from conspiracy theorists is
not really going to have much impact. But central question raised by this
article, is government funded media ever really independent, is a good one.

mainstream decision makers. But it was created to knit together an empire

The following turned up in my Google alerts, and I think it shows the
potential backlash that can happen with talk of increased public
funding of media. Same backlash happened with some of FDR's programs

CURRICULUM: Palo Alto's Esther Wojcicki's inspired arguement for high-school jouranlism education
Esther Wojcicki, director of Palo Alto [Calif.] High School's journalism
program (and chairman of the nonprofit Creative Commons), has written an
inspired argument for journalism education at the secondary-school level.
It's in the Summer 2010 edition of Nieman Reports, which came out in early
July. Here's the link:

Ning and news consumption
Briefly:
Ben Ullman, one of the JLAB partners of The Charlotte Observer, is
using Ning for his site, with Google Ads at the moment and local ads
soon, he says.
He went through the freemium/paid switch. It has taken lots of his own
time and learning, but it demonstrates that Ning for local community

Re: {JTM} How News Consumption is Shifting to the Personalized Social News Stream
Jane,
That's very interesting. You folks at The World Company have created some great CMSes!
I'm wondering how the functionality of WellCommons differs from a whitelabel social networking service such as Ning.com. I've contemplated integrating Ning into The Hawaii Independent, our local news startup.

New Arrival!!!
At long last, it is available. I am delighted to say that Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity is now for sale from Amazon, Berrett-Koehler, Barnes and Noble, or through local bookstores.

I have a confession. I have an ambitious goal for the book: to meet today's needs in the way The Fifth Discipline did 20 years ago. And you can help make that happen.
Re: {JTM} How News Consumption is Shifting to the Personalized Social News Stream
Hi Jane and Ikaika,
I too had been searching for a platform that provided social
networking functions and a robust content management system...one that
could easily feature news and information from trusted sources, but
still allowed for user-generated content and social media functions.

Ning's "freemium" model is now over. You have to pay to use their system. So,
one might as well look at different forum/CMS software before going the Ning
route.

Thanks, Ikaika!
I've started a couple of Ning groups, but find the system difficult to
navigate. It obviously works for many groups, so I don't mean to
denigrate Ning. It just doesn't work for what we're trying to do,
which is create a safe place and a trusted source for news and
information. Also, the jurno (the person formerly known as our health
